Mixtape Review: "In A World We Don't Belong (Pt.1)" by Sekou

"In A World We Don't Belong (Pt.1)" by Sekou mixtape cover
Here is a mixtape review brought to you the reader by an YouTube ad. By now avid readers of this blog know the script. While watching videos, an ad popped up playing a few seconds of an artist I did not know but I was interested so I listen and the rest is history. The artist is none other than Sekou.

Sekou a 20 year old from Ashby-de-la-Zouch near Leicester England is a promising rising star. He was signed to a UK record label in 2021 after posting a video of himself singing on TikTok. But he was amazed to discover his video had notched up 3.1 million views and 16,000 comments overnight. Sekou was even more surprised when he was approached by four record companies, including Good Soldier Records, which is home to well known artists including The 1975, Freya Ridings and Biffy Clyro. He then signed his first record deal at the company’s London offices and had been in talks to sign an American record deal with Warner Music. Sekou, has been performing his own songs and posting them on Instagram since he was at school. Sekou’s debut single Better Man is out now and was published by Universal-Island records and marks the start of one of the biggest stars of the new age. At 16, he gained recognition after posting soulful renditions online, leading to his discovery. Growing up in the church, Sekou developed a deep appreciation for Gospel music, and his powerful vocal ability is rooted in this foundation. Inspired by legends like Whitney Houston, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, and Beyonce, Sekou blends classic soul with contemporary pop. After signing with his label, he spent two years perfecting his unique sound. In 2023, his breakout single ‘Better Man’ debuted at BBC Introducing’s tent in Glastonbury, showcasing his vocal range and heartfelt songwriting. Following the success of ‘Better Man,’ Sekou released the up-tempo track ‘Forgiving Myself,’ demonstrating his artistic breadth. With successful listening parties and a sold-out headline show at London’s The Lower Third (Outernet), Sekou has proven his ability to connect with audiences. His debut EP, ‘Out of Mind,’ explores themes of love, heartbreak, and self-discovery, solidifying his rising star status in the UK music scene.
