Rewind: TLC (Singles Discography)
With the ascension of girl groups such as Flo, Say Now, Katseye etc. it seems like the girl group which was once a staple of the music industry is making a strong comeback. Remember when there was an abundance of girl groups who were dominating the industry over several decades? There was Destiny's Child, Spice Girls, Blaque, En Vogue, The Supremes, The Pussycat Dolls, The Pointer Sisters, Wilson Phillips and that is just scratching the surface! However, in the early 2010s it seemed that the industry turned its back on a formula that had proven itself to be successful with only Fifth Harmony and Little Mix being the only girl groups throughout that decade that were heavily promoted by the machine. There were many reasons for the decline of girl groups in the 2010s such as rivalry and friction amongst members when egos got involved, creative differences amongst group member and/or the label, everybody wanting to be a solo star or artist realizing splitting profits with group members plus their personal team was unsustainable. One group who was impacted by several of the reasons previously mentioned was the iconic TLC. Who can forget the iconic breakdown group member Left Eye gave of how the multi-platinum selling group went broke from the renowned show Behind The Music? Here is the link for inquiring minds: How You Can Sell 10 Million Records And Be Broke - according to Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes Despite their troubles with their record labels and internally between the group members, TLC which was comprised of Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins, Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, and Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas defined the late 90s and early 2000s with their distinct voices and unique blend of R&B and Pop mixed with biting social commentary that was not formulaic.
The group enjoyed success during the 1990s with nine top-ten hits on the Billboard Hot 100, including four number-one singles: "Creep", "Waterfalls", "No Scrubs", and "Unpretty". TLC also recorded four multi-platinum albums, including CrazySexyCool (1994), which received a diamond certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).They became the first R&B group in history to receive the million certification from the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) for FanMail (1999). Having sold over 60 million records worldwide, TLC is one of the five best-selling American girl groups of all time. VH1 ranked TLC as the greatest female group, placing them at number 12 on the list of 100 Greatest Women in Music. Billboard magazine ranked TLC as one of the greatest musical trios, as well as the seventh-most-successful act of the 1990s. The group's accolades include four career Grammy Awards, five MTV Video Music Awards, and five Soul Train Music Awards. Excerpt taken from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TLC_(group)
