Rewind: J. Cole (Singles Discography)
"Cole World, No Blanket" was my entrance into Hip-Hop and Rap. Even with no moral or musical objections to the genre, something never clicked between me and the art form. That was until I was introduced the subject of this week's TMC's Rewind Jermaine Lamarr Cole AKA J Cole. However, I must be completely transparent and say that while I enjoy his music and was gleeful in finally finding a connection to the genre, it was my instant attraction to him that drove my love for his art. At one point in my life Cole was the sexiest man in the universe, the centre of my adolescence fantasies and I was ready to verbally and/or physically fight anyone about it. WOW! Talk about a parasocial relationship. Yet, it must be stated that although it was my attraction to him that made me give his music a listening ear, it was the talent that kept me coming back album after album. His lyricism, cadence, flow, creativity and the fact that he produced a lot of his discography made me a bigger fan. Cole was my gateway into listening to the genre! He is the reason I listen to Nicki Minaj, Drake, Kendrick Lamar and went further back to listen to Jay Z, Nas, OutKast, Ludacris etc. In most recent times, his artistry has been disrespected, mocked and minimized between him opting out of the Drake & Kendrick feud, not fighting to be the number one rapper among the BIG 3 and not publicly engaging in the typical Hollywood rapper lifestyle. However it cannot be denied he is one of the greats of his generation and is MY favourite rapper OF ALL TIME. So with that mind I have decided to share my top 12 favourite tracks from his iconic discography throughout his distinguished career. The tunes that were chosen represent singles which are songs that were released to multiple formats to promote his various albums. The songs are listed in chronological order based on the release date of her albums and is not ranked in terms of personal favourability.
